Puzzle Wedding Rings

A puzzle is seen as an enigma that needs to be solved through a certain degree of ingenuity existing in the one who solves it. Puzzle consists basically from pieces that have to be put together in that logical way in order to complete the bigger picture of a shape, or a solution or even of a photo. It is often considered as element of entertainment, but at the same time it can generate out of mathematical problems which once they are solved can be offered as meaningful contribution to mathematical research. Solving puzzles reveals aptitudes of inductive reasoning or power of deduction as well. But how about the “puzzle rings”? Are they made according to the same rule that a puzzle respects in its displaying? Basically, the rule is the same: the completion of parts that have to make an eligible whole. In this respect, the puzzle rings are manufactured out of two bands with a pattern cut in their material in that way that combining the two bands confers the image of a whole band; lately the jewelers have created from four to six bands to render the puzzle ring a complexity and an impossibility to be dismantled once the bands are interlocked.

The story goes that these puzzle rings have their origin in a Turkish noble character that has made such a ring for his wife; he needed to know that his wife was faithful to him, and this puzzle ring once being removed from the finger would have fallen apart without giving the possibility for his wife to solve the proper combination of the bands. Well, this isn’t the happiest and encouraging symbol to be given to a ring, especially when it comes to wedding rings which are supposed to represent a token of love and commitment and devotion and not some kind of doubt regarding the faithfulness of the partner.

But anyway, if we look at the puzzle wedding ring as the representation of two pieces that come together with the purpose to complete each other in a bigger one, then the symbol of the wedding and as such of marriage can easily find its shape and can as well be considered good choice for a young couple who wishes through their marriage to wear the wedding bands that bond them for a completed life.

The artisans of jewelry use different precious metals to create these puzzle weeding rings, but the most used one is the sterling silver due to its resistance against potential deformations of the original shape, these deformations being capable of ruining the initial pattern of the puzzle, and without the pattern, the puzzle ring looses its complexity and purpose as well. But there are however combinations of white gold with yellow gold or mokume band with precious metal band creating beautiful piece of art in the field of bridal jewelry. Due to their design and patterns leading to solving puzzles, the puzzle wedding bands are considered to be among the wedding rings created in a note of uniqueness and originality, both for originality and innovation of the puzzle pattern.
