Irish Wedding Rings

The traditional Irish wedding ring, called Claddagh ring, because of the location the design and customs the ring is associated with, is worn as a wedding ring or given as a token of love.

Although the first ring was designed in the 17th century, Claddagh continues to be worn, mostly from those of Irish heritage, as a symbol of culture and engagement.

Irish wedding rings are also chosen by celebrities, as symbols of their everlasting love, but also made periodic appearances in movies and television as an illustration of wedding scene, or in order to indicate the relationship between two characters, as in “The Doors”.

A more fanciful and modernistic symbolism was given to the Irish wedding ring during the passing years. It is said, that when worn on the left hand, in the “common way”, it means that it is destined to the wearer to be with his/her love until the end of time.

When worn on the other hand, it means that the wearer is still under love`s spell, or his/her heart is yet to be won.

Being the most well-known symbol of love in Ireland,  the Claddagh ring become an  universal symbol of love, loyalty, friendship and fidelity, spread worldwide.

Although it can include many meaningful symbols when it is designed, usually this ring is made up from two hands holding a heart, with a crown on top, and there is a phrase associated when the ring is given: “With my hands I give you my heart, and crown it with all my love”.

There is also a romantic story in relation to the Irish wedding ring. It is said that, a man from Claddagh was captured by pirates on his way to the West Indies. Taken into slavery, he worked as a goldsmith. It is then when he created a ring for the woman he loved. After his release, he was surprised to see that the woman was still waiting for him, so they married and the woman wore the ring as her wedding band.

Claddagh rings come in a large variety today. From diamonds to emeralds, many precious stones are coming together in many beautiful combinations.

Known not only for their artistry and elegant design, but also for their cultural background, Celtic rings are one of the most special wedding bands you can find. If still searching for the perfect wedding ring, and if you want to have  tradition, beauty and elegance in one, the one option for you is the Irish wedding ring.
