The traditional Irish wedding ring, called Claddagh ring, because of the location the design and customs the ring is associated with, is worn as a wedding ring or given as a token of love.




Although the first ring was designed in the 17^th century, Claddagh continues to be worn, mostly from those of Irish heritage, as a symbol of culture and engagement.

There is also a romantic story in relation to the Irish wedding ring. It is said that, a man from Claddagh was captured by pirates on his way to the West Indies. Taken into slavery, he worked as a goldsmith. It is then when he created a ring for the woman he loved. After his release, he was surprised to see that the woman was still waiting for him, so they married and the woman wore the ring as her wedding band.
