Highland Interlace Style Wedding Rings

When we say Highland we think of so many different regions in the world, but next to "interlace style" it becomes clear that it has to do with the Scottish Highlands - as being the name of the mountainous regions of the North of Scotland. An interlace style used in creating jewelry means a metallic band or group of metallic bands that pass alternately over and under one another, like a woven thread, loping and knotting around one another.

In the agitated history of the British, it came a time when the British, Irish and Scandinavian cultures crossed and they may have resulted in what is known today to be Celtic Interlace. The tradition was inherited by the Celtic people that continued the interlaced knotwork reflected on the style of decoration that appeared in metalwork, textiles and art.

Since the symbol of interlaced bands appeared on the pages of their Christian books, it has to have a meaning related more to the spiritual side of human nature, than the physical one. For instance this pattern found in the design of a Highland interlace style wedding ring would be a more realistic symbol considering that is made up of two interlaced bands.

Another interesting suggestion is that the Celtic knotwork has its roots in the form of musical notation, due to some stones found in Scotland, carved stones that used a specific free form type of interlace to record musical notes. In others opinion the concept of interlace is based on one single idea: that all the things have their origin in one single substance, energy or consciousness which has its elements intertwined with each other in order to reveal the essence of that single ONE. In this way the pattern of interlace represents a complex unity of creation.

The Highland's jewelry reveals a strong relation to the Celtic jewelry; there are plenty of Scottish jewelry workshops that are displaying their collections of wedding rings in a richness of Celtic style design, such as love knot gold/platinum wedding ring, Celtic abbey ring, love knot gold/diamond wedding ring, not to mention the Scottish metal ware which carries the interlace symbol carved in different house objects.

It is the ornamental element that the interlace symbol is bringing in art craft of Scottish artisans who use it in a variety of styles, following the nature pattern and subtly incorporating modified elements from other cultures. The characteristics of over-and-under interlacing is a perfect meaning to be rendered to the wedding rings, especially for those couples who want to have their lives intertwined through the act of holy matrimony.
