Heart Wedding Rings

Heart has always been and still is considered the symbol that relates to the emotional, spiritual feature of human beings. In earlier times of the humankind, heart was seen as a location of human mind, symbolizing the power of thinking that attracted mostly the evil spirits, as it is depicted in the Genesis, where the Pharaoh was given a hardened heart in order for God to perform His miraculous signs. The ancient Greek philosophers saw heart as the place where thought, emotion or reason was dwelling.

But in time heart has gathered more and more the popular meaning of the soul; poetry is the art that depicts heart as the metaphor of soul being the place to host love.  In nowadays icons that belong to Roman Catholic religion, heart is represented in the images of “Sacred Heart of Jesus” and the “Immaculate Heart of Mary”. Generally the heart symbol is depicted in a shape that is filled with red color to suggest passion and powerful emotion. The Valentine’s Day is also using this symbol on the Valentine’s cards to reflect romantic love.

There is no clear evidence what could have lead to the representation of the heart in this popular acknowledged shape, since the shape resembles more to a bovine heart than a human being’s. Some speculate around the idea that actually this shape was rendered by imitating the seed of a plant called “silphium” which was used in ancient times as a contraceptive herbal. Others go by the idea that it may suggest the female’s body revealing the roundness of the body’s forms that one can find only in the feminist expression.

But altogether, heart in present times wherever it may appears either in paintings, in Valentine’s cards or religious icons it lets us think as being related to the feeling that connects two beings in a true and deep relationship: love. Without love, a relationship can not last, love is the one that gives us wings and make us float in the realm of dream, a dream that one day will become reality through the act of marriage.

The wedding couples turn their faces more and more toward the thought of imprinting their life with the symbol of love.
