An engagement ring is the ring that shows to the other, that the person wearing it is engaged to getting married. In the United Kingdom and the United States, engagement rings are being worn only by women and their design is alike to the gender, namely including precious stones, mostly diamond, but in other cultures  both men and women wear matching rings, which can be plain, and used further as wedding rings as well.

The first documented use of a diamond ring to signify engagement was by a young duke in the imperial court of Vienna in 1470. The price for an engagement ring differs,  because of the material used in order to design the ring, whether it includes a gemstone, the value of any gemstone, and the seller. It is the quality of the gemstone that sets the price of an engagement ring, when it comes to buying them. Diamonds increase in price according to their weight, color, clarity and cut. Other precious stones are less common choices, but if chosen right, they can let the same impression behind them as the diamonds do. Furthermore, it is unique and outstanding.

Engagement rings, like any other kind of jewelry, come in many different styles, forms, suiting everyone`s style. Traditionally gold and platinum direct the lion share of engagement ring purchases. With the expected continued rise of precious metals prices the time is just the perfect one for alternative metals for creating your wedding bands and settings. Another big category is engagement rings with side stones. Rings with a larger diamond set in the middle and smaller diamonds on the side fit under this category. The so called trilogy rings, are rings with three diamonds that are all lined  in a row with the bigger stone in the center, as a representation of past, present and future.

Engagement rings are worn usually by woman, but in some countries by both men and women. Traditionally they are gold bands, although more complex designs and other materials are becoming more and more popular  and the engagement ring worn by the man serves also as the wedding ring most of the time.

The engagement ring is worn on the left hand ring finger in some countries, while in Poland and Ukraine for example, it is customary for the ring to be worn on the right hand. Germans though, wear the engagement ring on the left hand, but move to the right hand when married.

The couple might choose a pre-engagement ring as well, also called promise ring, but this is not that common, although gaining popularity more and more nowadays.
