Catholic Wedding Rings

In the Catholic religion, the wedding is a special event that represents the proof in front of God that a man and a woman decided to live together and to form a family. The symbol of this union is the wedding ring.  Before exchanging the rings, the bride and the groom say the vows. This symbolizes that that both the man and the woman understand the responsibilities a marriage involves and accept to stay together until the death will tear them apart.

The groom’s ring is traditionally made of gold and the bride’s ring is made of silver. The rings are blessed with holy water .Then the groom is blessed with the bride’s ring and the priest puts it on his finger and the bride is blessed with the groom’s ring and the priest puts it on her finger. Then the rings are exchanged three times by the priest or by the best man. Usually the Catholic wedding rings have Christian symbols on them, such as the Cross or thorns, recalling Jesus Christ crucifixion. The engraved wedding rings also seem to be very popular. It is now possible to engrave about 50 words, expressing your sentiments, on the inner part of the ring.

Catholic Russians have a special tradition about the wedding rings. They are actually three interlocking rings which are the symbol of the Trinity. They can be made of three different colored precious metals or of the same metal.

What is more to say about the wedding rings is that through the time, their look didn’t change a lot. In fact, most of the Catholics prefer to wear classical rings, not extravagant ones. The significance of the ring tradition is more spiritual than physical so, the luxurious and outrageous aspect of it can be easily omitted.

This tradition is not just about Catholics. It dates back to the Egyptians. 4800 ago they were the first to exchange rings as it was linked to magic. They believed that the ring symbolized eternal love and an unbreakable connection between people. The ring became the symbol of love, in the hope that this most worthy of emotions could take on the characteristics of the circle and capture eternity. Later, the Roman women wore rings to show that they were no longer free.

The rigs used to be made of iron, showing power and strength but then they changed the tradition and made them out of gold or silver, because these metals didn’t rust as the iron. Years later, not only the practical side of using gold for rings was take into consideration but also the superstitious part. Irish people, for example thought that it brought bad luck to the bride and groom to marry with ring made of anything else but gold. Therefore, people were often given gold rings in order to get married, but of course, this didn’t last for too long.

To conclude, the wedding rings are not just elements of the wedding ceremony, but symbol of everlasting love and union. At least, this is what is should mean.
