Biblical Wedding Rings

When it comes to ring, the shape of the ring, the circle, speaks for itself. Since Ancient times its meaning revolves around the idea that circle represents wholeness, perfection - a flawless geometric shape without beginning and without end. In the drawings we depict the sun as a ring of fire, the earth, as it was before known to be round, the moon as a silver ring, all these natural elements find their shape in that of a ring. That's why people have chosen to wear it on the finger; to celebrate the perfection and at the same time to aspire to it.

The ring came into use in Christian ceremonies, and was known to appear also in biblical times by the Hebrews. As a token of love and eternity they become wedding rings in the 2nd century BC, as the Roman poet Plautus documented. This fact was acknowledged due to the inscriptions found on the interior of the rings, that also stated the recording of the marriage contracts.

biblical-wedding-ringsThe Romans were actually the first ones to use finger rings as symbols to "tie" people to their marital partners. It was handed by the groom to the family of the bride in order to reassure them of his commitment and his financial means to support the bride. All these happened mostly in a betrothal ceremony which preceded the marriage rite, later on the ring became part of the wedding process.

At the beginning the engraving spelled quotations from Scripture in the Hebrew alphabet "Trust in the Lord with all thine heart"; lately they started to define the feeling of love or appreciation for the beloved ones -"Love, Hope, Faith".

During the 16th century, the Motto biblical wedding rings gained popularity using engravings on the outside in French or Latin, and ended up with interior engravings in English. The Mottoes were often using religious co-notations such as: "Til God above doth seal our love", "I have obtained whom God ordained" and so on.

Nowadays, biblical wedding rings can be ordered in  different precious metals bearing either religious designs, such as holy cross or angels or quotations from the Bible that are related to the love one holds for his bride, such as: "Love is patient, love is kind and is not jealous", "What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder"
